Wärtsilä to supply the engineered equipment for a hybrid power project in Kazakhstan - "First of its type"

Six engines will regulate the frequency and voltage of electricity generated from renewable sources.

Wärtsilä will supply engineered equipment for a new 120 MW power plant in the Mangystau region of Kazakhstan, Wärtsilä announced. The order scope includes six large, gas-fueled bore engines, as well as mechanical and electrical auxiliary equipment.

The order was placed by Kazakhstan Caspian Offshore Industries (KCOI), which is the main contractor for the development of a large hybrid power project. In addition to the engine power plant, the project includes a 77 MW wind farm and a 50 MW solar power plant.

– This will be the first hybrid project of its type to be implemented in Kazakhstan,” says CEO of KCOI Mirko Borghesi in the announcement.

When completed, the project will supply electrical power to oil and gas facilities in the region. According to Kenneth Engblom, Vice President, Africa and Europe at Wärtsilä Energy, the project supports Kazakhstan to move towards decarbonised energy production. Wärtsilä’s engines will regulate the frequency and voltage of electricity generated from renewable sources.

– In order for widescale integration of power from renewable sources, grid balancing capabilities are necessary, Engblom says.

In November, Wärtsilä presented its solutions in Almaty and Astana. Wärtsilä believes that accelerating the energy transition is crucial for Kazakhstan to achieve its 2060 carbon neutrality goal. Achieving carbon neutrality requires extensive modernization of the industry and the adoption of renewable energy sources.

Wärtsilä has been doing business in Kazakhstan since the early 1990s.
